Question about going to see a premarital counselor?

I am 24 years old. I live with my boyfriend who is 29, my 3 year old son from a previous relationship, and together we have a 7 month old son. For the last few months we have bickering over petty things, there is a trust issue that I have with him, and a lot of communication problems. He said he would see a counselor with me to see if there is anyway we can repair our relationship. I was wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this and did counseling help? Also are there any self help books and/or tools we could use?
