Water proofing area rug to protect laminate flooring from pet?

Hi - We have laminate (tongue and groove as well) and we have a new puppy who isnt house broken yet and is fond of rugs, why is that? Anyway, what we bought some of those pee pads and put them underneath the area rugs. If it seeps through then it hits the pee pad and we can remove it and replace it with a clean one - once we wash the spot of course. I put a little double sided tape between the back of the pee pad and the floor to hold it in place. So far that has seemed to work.
